Ruth - Week 2 - God is Working Nov 10, 2019

November 11, 2019

After much loss, pain, and suffering in Moab; Ruth and Naomi return to Bethlehem.  Once in Bethlehem, Ruth begins to work to provide for her and Naomi not knowing that she is working in the fields of a relative.  This God ordained interaction sets one more building block into place that will bring about redemption for all who are involved.  More importantly, God is putting in motion the Messiah; the redemption of the entire world through Ruth, Naomi, and Boaz.

Ruth - Loss and Suffering - November 3, 2019

November 3, 2019

The land of Israel has always been associated with God’s covenant blessings.  Having left the land of promise for Moab, Naomi’s family experienced incredible loss and she is left seemingly without hope for the future.  When she hears that God has visited His people, she begins a journey back to Israel and back to God’s promises.

Jonah & The Pursuing God - A Relentless God - Oct 27, 2019

Jonah & The Pursuing God - A Relentless God - Oct 27, 2019

October 28, 2019

The story of Jonah ends with a cliffhanger.  We're left wondering what happened to Jonah and the people of Nineveh.  If Jonah had been the main character, this story would have the worst ending ever.  But we see that the main character is not the petulant prophet but a Relentless God who pursues His wayward creation with an outrageous grace.  As recipients of God's grace we are called to embody His grace and live in response to that amazing grace.

Jonah & The Pursuing God - The Repentant City - Oct 20, 2019

Jonah & The Pursuing God - The Repentant City - Oct 20, 2019

October 20, 2019

When Jonah arrived at Nineveh he did the bare minimum and preached a short message of repentance (if it can be called that).  Despite half-hearted effort the people repented and turned to God.  The Ninevites were known as wicked people, yet the message they heard caused them to turn to God.  We can never predict the effect that sharing God’s story with someone will have because in the end, repentance is a miracle.

Jonah & The Pursuing God - The Repentant Prophet - Oct 13, 2019

October 13, 2019

After running away from God, getting thrown overboard and getting swallowed by a giant fish, Jonah realizes that his desire to flee from God's presence has come true.  Ironically, in the darkness of the belly of the fish Jonah sees more clearly than before and he realizes the futility of running away from God.  In that moment, his despair leads him to repentance, which leads him back to relationship with God.

Jonah & The Pursuing God - The Rebellious Prophet - Oct 6, 2019

When the word of God came to Jonah that he should go Nineveh, he instead ran in the opposite direction to get away from God’s purpose.  Jonah’s response isn’t unique. He allowed his prejudices and worldview to get in the way.  His story serves as a mirror that helps us see our own flaws and missteps, but it also helps us to see a compassionate God who delights in mercy.

Restoring Hope By Seeking the Good of our City - Sept 29, 2019

Whether they realize or not, most churches adopt one of three attitudes towards the city they live in. Those attitudes are generally apathy or animosity or imitation. Churches can choose to ignore the community around them or feel threatened by the ever-changing culture, or have a desire to just blend in, but God has a different vision for the church.  He calls us to be agents of change and transformation by actively working for the good of our community.

Restoring Hope By Being Salt and Light - September 22, 2019

September 22, 2019

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus lays out a vision for the Kingdom of God and those who are a part of it.  He tell His audience that those who take part in His Kingdom are to live lives that are noticeably different.  Jesus compares His followers to salt and light, two elements that have had a profound impact on civilization and declares that we are to function in a similar way.

Restoring Hope By Loving People to Jesus - September 15, 2019

September 15, 2019

Sometimes people can’t see their need for God or just don’t know how to approach Him.  We can restore hope to their lives by being the ones who lead them to Jesus by having faith when they don’t and believing when they can’t. Faith in action looks a lot like love and sometimes we have to “pick up the corners of the mat” in order to love people to Jesus.
